NVOC Status Report -for July 2014

Change
A word that invokes discomfort in some and to others sends a signal of opportunity.
Change is all around us - we see it in the approaching change of seasons. Change is also something that we expect to see on the immediate horizon with respect to the implementation of the numerous reports and recommendations of the Standing Committee and also those brought forward through the Ombudsman’s reports. The summer is soon over and it will be time for our politicians to also get back to real work and take action on the changes needed to ensure our Veterans are well supported.
Change is also apparent within NVOC and while the politicians have been on recess, the NVOC Executive has been in gear all summer.
Our membership committee comprised of Gary Pollock. Mike Bryan, Wayne Douglas and Betty Goodison have been actively engaged with making improvements to our membership database to make things run a lot smoother and in a more robust manner. This is vital to supporting our ongoing growth. Additionally, changes are being made to our web page to make it more user friendly and support our membership with the information they need, so please watch this space over the coming months.
You will have also noticed that a new NVOC Aim/Purpose and supporting Objectives have been developed by our strategy committee, under the leadership of Ivan Fenton. This is important to us as it sets forth our future. The Regional committee has also been busy with Doug Brunton and Gary Pollock producing a new communications brochure to aid in our membership activities and this is now available for use…just drop Doug an email. Last but not least is the fine work of the Advocacy committee, which supports everything we do. Look towards the September Presidents Report as this will be dedicated solely to this important area.
There is much that needs to be done to improve the lot of the Veterans community, and the NVOC is working with that aim firmly in sight. With an election soon to be looming on the horizon, it is now time for change; the government must demonstrate how it intends to make good on the recommendations from too many reports.
The Duke of Wellington, once said, “I don't know what effect these men will have upon the enemy, but, by God, they terrify me”. He was not referring to the politicians of his day but it appears to be equally applicable today.
Now is the time for action rather than motion, and let us not confuse the two.
