Presidents Status Report - July 2011

July 16, 2011

Greeting Veterans

NOTE

President

We are focusing now on two related areas- advocacy and membership. The logic is “why should members pay dues” ? Answer should be “a veteran’s organization – specifically NVOC- will be lis-tened to more than one individual. But which item to address – there are many veteran issues and NVOC cannot tackle all at the same time. The most pressing issue based on feedback from Regions and members at large is “long term care”. Tud Kaulbach has a Working Group addressing an “Action Plan” (Gord – suggest “Action Plan” may be better choice of words for dealing with VAC) for NVOC to champion this item to officials at Veterans Affairs. The Plan has been circulated to the Working Group and I will forward it to several other Veterans Organizations who are supportive of our initia-tive.

Once we have – and you have seen –our position paper then NVOC Exec will schedule a VAC/NVOC consultation meeting – either here in Ottawa or Charlottetown PEI.

Membership is being looked at Working Group chaired by John Coulombe with Betty Goodison and Jerry Bryan. You will be hearing more about both of these Working Groups shortly.

The Regions through Doug Brunton are part of both of these working groups.

A third area – advocacy and membership notwithstanding- is the credibility of NVOC in the eyes of other veteran associations, Veterans Affairs officials and soon the public.

During June/July Veteran Affairs Canada invited NVOC and Jarrot Holzhaeur was part of a Delega-tion to visit France in early July/ NVOC were invited to be part of welcoming Committee in Ottawa for the recent Royal Visit / NVOC President was phoned by new VAC The Honourable Steven Blaney his first day on the job and NVOC was at the first new VAC Stakeholders meeting of key veterans organizations the end of June.

Taken together- along with regional events and presentations -NVOC is moving from the “will we ever get organized?” and survive stage to the “acceptance of an established NVOC “as an integral and responsible member of the veteran’s community association scene.

We still have a long way to go but we are trying!

Regards
